What are the purposes of sport games for individuals and the society? Some people think they are no more than a way of the leisure among the audience. Personally, I believe there are more meanings involved in sports than entertainment, and my reasons would be explored as below.
The first social role sports games play is in educating young generations. In fact, it is mainly through watching team sports like football and bad basketball that children can gradually grasp the essence and values of cooperation and competition, as well as acquiring qualities of teamwork and strategic thinking. In addition, to the spiritual extent, sports can provide a precious source of encouragement and inspiration to the unfortunates. For example, in eyes of miserable people struggling in unemployment, homelessness or illness, those great sports games and athletes are mental placebo which can give bravery, consolation, dreams, brightness, hopes and visions back to them. In other word, with the enlightenment of sports games, people can embrace active attitudes towards challenges in life.
What is more, large-scale sports events are also an economic catalyst for local society. For one thing, during the period of Olympics and World Cup, the inflow of tens of thousands of athletes, coaches, officers, journalists and audience would drastically boost domestic economy, such as the consumption of hotels, restaurants, commodities and souvenirs. For another, many sporting venues which are in operation after the event is over can be city icons and ideal attractions for tourists. Expectedly, with a consistent thriving of tourism, many kinds of industries and new job vacancies can be activated.
Admittedly, I have to concede that entertaining is also a part of the nature of sports games. In fact, most of professional sports, from tennis to football to boxing, are amusement-oriented. During watching them, viewers can relax mental stress and have pleasure and excitement, as well as getting rid of worries and anxiety. Moreover, main goals of companies behind sports are to seek profits, so that sports games are nothing but a tool for making money by exciting the audience. Therefore, sports games are mere a leisure option for the public, with no difference from pop music, movies and video games.
In conclusion, the contributions sports games make to the public should never be underestimated. Although they fulfill a mission of making money by relaxing people, their positive influences on people’s minds and social economy are far more meaningful and valuable.

Gradually, the public is beginning to worry that the worse is yet to come. Some fear that if little or nothing is done in time to prevent the disaster from happening , humankind as species might be doomed as well. Such is at least the view held by quite a few scientists and environmentalists who call for severe sanctions, or else. Others, however, believe that the case is not hopeless. The good news is that there is an increasing awareness of the great danger human beings are in. An urgent global commitment has actually been reached to join forces to maintain ecosystem, saving Nature for Nature's sake, despite the fact that in certain crucial fields apparently not enough has been done. As it is, protecting the natural mechanisms and preventing pollution are hard tasks to deal with, nevertheless human beings ought to trust themselves in meeting the challenges, by reason or by force.
Excessive logging, illegal hunting and fishing, and out-of-control pollution continue in many corners of the planet on penalties of heavy fines and criminal charges, but concerned governments across the world are no longer turning a blind eye. It is a truth universally acknowledged that, unless effective measures are taken altogether at once, mankind's road to doom is sure, although very slow. Fortunately human beings now know that harming the earth is easy like pulling bricks from a giant wall, and that they may keep doing it until the wall suddenly collapses.

For example, as for a young female, wearing fashionable and often costly clothes is a convenient way which not only can boost her self-confidence in a job interview, but also makes her more attractive in dating a man.
To some extent, choosing fashion clothes is beneficial for the mentality of modern people. In fact, today, personalities of the public are always inhibited because they are forced to wear the same-style clothing, such as uniforms in school or work wear in workplace. Hence, the pursuit of fashion featuring unique designs, colors and patterns is a good way of helping people to get rid of the feelings of stress, monotony or oppression. In other words, by shopping or wearing favored fashion in leisure time, people can recover the freedom for the expression of individuality, and a good mood as well.
However, demerits of fashion should never be ignored, and the main one is that a strong desire of owning costly clothes stimulates the overconsumption of people. Generally speaking, fashion clothes belong to luxury goods whose prices are incredibly high. In too many cases, people obsessed with fashion cut off the basic budget of daily life, or max out credit cards, for the purpose of purchasing a single expensive luxurious dress, which, eventually, causes the finance out of balance.
The most worrying aspect is that this trend builds up a wrong admiration of materialism among people. In a fashion-oriented society, People wearing famous-brand clothes are respectable and prideful, while the ones who cannot afford the fashion are despised. Therefore, under such social values which judge people through their appearance, instead of talents and abilities, people in poverty would be discriminated and mistreated, even lose the competition in job employment.
In conclusion, the high popularity of fashion lies on two main reasons, temptation of advertisements and the purpose of improving the personal image. Besides, I believe the disadvantages of this trend are over its advantages, because crass materialism causes people to forget the limitation of money spending or spiritual values.
