Babylon Hanging Garden

The Babylonian kingdom flourished under the rule of the famous King, Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC). It was not until the reign of the Neo-Babylonian dynasty that the Mesopotamian civilization reached its ultimate glory. Nebuchadnezzar II (604 -562 BC) is credited for building the legendary Hanging Gardens. It is said that the Gardens were built by Nebuchadnezzar to please his wife or concubine who had been "brought up in Media and had a passion for mountain surroundings".

While the most descriptive accounts of the Gardens come from Greek historians such as Berossus and Diodorus Siculus, Babylonian records stay silent on the matter. Tablets from the time of Nebuchadnezzar do not have a single reference to the Hanging Gardens, although descriptions of his palace, the city of Babylon, and the walls are found. Even the historians who give detailed descriptions of the Hanging Gardens never saw them. Modern historians argue that when Alexander's soldiers reached the fertile land of Mesopotamia and saw Babylon, they were impressed. When they later returned to their rugged. homeland, they had stories to tell about the amazing gardens and palm trees at Mesopotamia… About the palace of Nebuchadnezzar… About the Tower of Babel and the ziggurats. And it was the imagination of poets and ancient historians that blended all these elements together to produce one of the World Wonders.

It wasn't until the twentieth century that some of the mysteries surrounding the Hanging Gardens were revealed. Archaeologists are still struggling to gather enough evidence before reaching the final conclusions about the location of the Gardens, their irrigation system, and their true appearance.

The Hanging Monastery

If you're looking for a truly off-the-beaten path adventure with a spiritual side, few destinations rival these sacred sites. A combination of architectural marvels and temples built by eccentric orders, the spiritual sanctuaries in this slideshow are truly beyond belief.

We begin with the Hanging Monastery on Hengshan Mountain in China. Carved into a cliff nearly 250 feet above the ground, the monastery appears to be floating in the air. The temple contains several shrines as well as silver, gold and clay statues representative of Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist teachings.

Known properly as Xuankong Si, the temple was built in 491 and remains standing today, though it was renovated during both the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and again by the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Freak solar activity creates incredible Northern Lights which are seen as far south as Arkansas.

It's one of the world's most famous and spectacular solar phenomena, but those hoping to experience the Northern Lights usually have to travel to remotest Norway to witness their beauty.

But freak solar activity yesterday saw the stunning auroral display stretch much further than usual, as it was spotted by stunned stargazers across half of northern America.

The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, are created by the Sun's atmosphere, which blasts particles into the protective magnetic field surrounding the Earth.

Electrically-charged particles are thrown towards the Earth and carried on the solar wind towards the upper part of our planet's atmosphere.

When the particles are swept towards the poles and react with ions in the atmosphere, the result creates Mother Nature's amazing light show as vivid swathes of bright colour shoot across the night sky.

The most recent mass ejection of particles occurred when most of the U.S. was getting dark on a particularly clear night, leading to the spectacular light show witnesses in Washington D.C., Arkansas and Virginia.

Amateur photographer Brian Emfinger was one of the stargazers who captured the rare occurrence after being alerted to the aurora show on SpaceWeather.com.

He said: "I ran out and put my camera out and immediately saw reddish aurora. I ran out into the field, and within a few minutes the aurora went crazy!"

Others who witnessed the spectacle in America described seeing "the blood-red Northern Lights aflame in the night sky".
